Dr. Jim Berkson is a Courtesy Associate Professor of the School of Forest Resources and Conservation at the University of Florida as well as the director and ecologist at the National Marine Fisheries Service Recruiting, Training, and Research program. He received his Masters in Zoology from the University of British Columbia and his PhD in Biological Sciences at Montana State University. Jim is with us today to tell us about his journey through life and science.
Jim Berkson is a population dynamics scientist whose work includes building models needed to effectively manage marine resources. Dr. Berkson has worked for federal, state, and tribal resource agencies for over twenty years. Because of this, Dr. Berkson has unique insight on the important role that population dynamics scientists play in bridging the gap between science and policy in the real world. Dr. Berkson’s research focuses on numerous marine species (as well as terrestrial species) including marine fish stocks, marine mammals, and sea turtles. Current research is located in the U.S. South Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in population ecology, natural resource management, computer programming, and simulation modeling.
